Minecraft Player Reaches Legendary Achievement After 14 Years
A dedicated Minecraft player has managed to reach the game’s Far Lands after 14 years of playing. This long-running Minecraft achievement has seen the player raise over $500,000 for charities over the years.
Older versions of Minecraft featured a bug that saw the game’s procedural terrain generation completely break approximately 12.5 million blocks away from the initial spawn point. For just about every player, that was far enough away that it didn’t really matter, as they would never go far enough away to ever encounter it. The anomaly saw giant walls of stone appear at the end of the map, and was dubbed the Far Lands by the Minecraft community. However, it was patched out of later versions of the game.
Minecraft Player Reaches Far Lands After 14 Years
Playing on an older build of the game to ensure the Far Lands still exist, Minecraft YouTuber and streamer KurtJMac has finally completed their journey after over 12.5 million blocks traveled. A clip from their October 4 stream shows them finally seeing the Far Lands for the first time, concluding a journey that began back in March 2011, when Minecraft was still in beta. He was just 40% of the way through his Minecraft challenge back in 2021, so he has managed to make quick progress over the last few years.
Since the start of KurtJMac’s Far Lands or Bust challenge, he has raised over $500,000 for multiple charities and had his efforts recognized by the Guinness World Records for the longest journey in Minecraft. It’s not clear what KurtJMac plans to do now that he has completed his journey, although few could blame him if a short break from Minecraft was on the cards.
The open nature of Minecraft means that it is ripe for unique challenges for players to take on themselves. These kinds of challenges do not offer any in-game rewards; the satisfaction serves as its own reward. While this isn’t for everyone, the idea that players create their own fun in Minecraft is a core tenet that has allowed the game to thrive for so long.
